RSH
Architects was commissioned to study the feasibility of incorporating the
administrative and support requirements of the Schreyer Honors College in
under-utilized space at Atherton Hall. Initial studies indicated
significant variances in stated program space requirements of the Honors
College with available areas as allocated. Additionally compounding the
difficulties of space deficits, functional activities such as refuse
removal, moving students in and out, service deliveries and other
maintenance access conflicted with the proposed location of the Honors
College's entry via the existing service court.
RSH Architects produced a conceptual design, comprised of a small addition
with new site service courts to accommodate basic functions and
reorganization of existing ground and first floor areas of the building.
The design progressed through several refinements to respond to specific
shared use concerns and to satisfy both Honors College and Housing
interests.
The new addition utilizes composite framing with masonry bearing exterior
walls, compatible with the existing construction. New reinforced masonry
site court walls enclose mechanical equipment and refuse containers below
the entry level and visually shield these utilities from both the street
below and Atherton Hall above. Initial Occupancy began in February, 2000.
The final renovations were completed in September, 2000.
