Architects was commissioned to provide architectural services for the
adaptive reconstruction of the former St. Joseph School of Nursing into a
long-term and skilled (nursing) care facility. The existing structure
presented numerous physical problems, such as inadequate corridor width,
insufficient elevator service, failed exterior elements such as roofing,
windows and masonry, and general incompatibility with the proposed use’s
functions.
The
rehabilitation provides reception, administration and special nursing care
on the first floor with 74 personal care beds on the second and third
floors. The fourth and fifth floors provide 86 skilled care beds with
lounges, dining and activities. The sixth floor includes a chapel, beauty
shop, large lounge and two rooftop greenhouse lounges with outside
activity areas.
The main dining room and kitchen are located in the basement along with
maintenance and storage areas. In addition to complete architectural
interior reconstruction, the work included masonry restoration, new
roofing, new windows, new and rehabilitated elevators, total NFPA 13 fire
protection with fire pump, and all new mechanical and electrical systems.
