Architects completed
designs for renovations of Warnock Commons, a 34,000 square foot housing
and food service facility at Penn State University's main campus. The
project developed from the firm's program and budget analysis which
evaluated various alternatives to both service program responses and
physical improvements. The University's main objectives were to offer
contemporary food services and housing life facilities to the students,
provide efficient building operation, and satisfy safety and
accessibility requirements.
The design concept focused on a railroad passenger train aesthetic to
harmonize with the circa '50s materials of the existing structure. Many of
the high quality finishes, such as terrazzo floors and stainless
curtainwall components were well suited to the new motif and retained as
elements of the design. The main lobby serves as a concourse, offering
access to totally renovated student life services, including activity and
recreation areas, a computer lab, post office and conference center.
Access to the two primary food service areas, The Pennsylvanian and 21st
Century Limited, also originates from this area.
