Architects most
recently provided architectural services for Phase I of the new residence hall at
Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. The first
phase of development houses 93 students and offers additional
accommodations for resident aides and management, as well as office space
and a common area.
The living-learning atmosphere will offer a contemporary suite-style
configuration with modern conveniences such as in-room computer ports in
an effort to attract new students. Each suite accommodates four
students (two single rooms and one double-occupancy room) with a common
living area and individual shared bath.
In addition, each floor includes a public lounge with kitchenette, and
the ground floor will provide laundry, recreation, and storage facilities.
The college’s master plan envisions a second phase to include academic
learning facilities and the capacity to house 118 additional students.
This will include future student service spaces, such as academic and
study areas for the ground floor.
The design of the new Residence Hall compliments the college’s
traditional aesthetic. The building’s structure consists of masonry
bearing wall with pre-cast concrete floors.
Construction for Phase I of the new Residence Hall began in November of
2001 with accelerated site development. The building was occupied in late
August for the Fall 2002 Semester. Phase II will increase student occupancy to
220 beds.
