RSH
Architects provided a complete redesign of the
interior layout with new mechanical and electrical systems for Welch Hall,
a three-story, 13,600 square foot dormitory on the Carnegie Mellon
University (CMU) campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Built
in 1918, this original Hornbostel designed dormitory required improvements
for compliance with new safety and accessibility guidelines. New stairs
and fire escapes were added and complete renovations were made to its
existing residential suites, common areas, lounges, kitchen, and laundry
facilities. Due
to the rigid schedule, close coordination between CMU housing services,
RSH Architects, its consultants and the contractor was required to
complete the project within an 11-week period. Construction began on May
15th and was completed on schedule by August 10th to accommodate fifty-six
students for the fall semester of 2001.
