Architects was commissioned to
design a 23,000 square foot apartment building
with 27 housing units. Located on the site of the old Westlake Elementary
School in the West End District of the City of Pittsburgh, Westlake
Apartments is a classic red brick apartment building for independent
seniors.
Each 540 square foot unit consists of a one bedroom apartment with a
living room with dining area, full kitchen, full bath and foyer with air
conditioning, carpeting, and window treatments.
In addition, the building includes a small management office, a large
community-activity room with cooking amenities, and a full laundry
facility. Its open floor plan encourages senior residents to use the
entire facility, while conveniences such as shallow rise stairs and an
elevator allow for easy access throughout the three-story building.
Design and development for the Westlake Elderly Apartments was made
possible through funding from Section 202 of U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD) Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program and
monies from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). The project was
sponsored by Action Housing, Inc., a not for profit corporation.
Construction is scheduled for Late Spring 2002.
