Architects was commissioned to provide additions and alterations to White-Cliff Nursing Home, a one
hundred and thirty-four (134) bed long term care facility, licensed by the
PA Department of Heath. The facility was comprised of a series of
one and two story additions connected to an original one story nursing
home.
The project consists of a 10,000 square foot, one story additions and
renovations expand the facility by twenty-eight (28) beds to a total of
one hundred and sixty-two (162) beds. The addition provides a new
entrance, administrative offices, twenty four additional beds in twelve
new and twelve new resident rooms, as well as nurses' stations, a grand
lounge, and personal care room. Renovations to the existing nursing home consists of all new floor and
wall finishes, new lighting, redesign of the dietary department, expanded
therapy spaces, and conversion of one nursing wing into an Alzheimer unit.
The facility sits on a wooded site in rural Greenville, PA. The
addition's exterior is sympathetic with the existing facility, and uses
contemporary forms to recall traditional resort buildings of the
Pennsylvania mountains. Exterior shapes reflect spaces housed
within. The steep roof colonnaded structure defines the entrance to
the facility. The opposing barrel vaulted wing houses the grand
lounge, with resident rooms in the connecting low roof wing.
Generous windows, vaulted ceilings, and clerestories create an airy, open
quality. In public areas, bold colors were used, providing an upbeat
environment for the residents and their families. The strong colors
are an aid in way-finding for the elderly residents, in addition to their
uplifting psychological impact.
